So Long

roots gnarled and spread

an evening sky aching at dusk

a wind so shifty it squinted

hearing the song of sorrow

rising and frail with hope

calling towards the dawn

pleading the sharp darkness

would soften to pure light

cradled beneath fallen leaves

the nestling echo of panic

for it had never seen trees

rising above its aerie

leaves green dancing on twigs

waved from forever above

the melody now heartbroken

as it sang tears of so long
